Job Summary:
The Steel Detailer Checker is responsible for reviewing, verifying, and approving shop drawings for miscellaneous metals, including steel stairs, railings, and other structural components for commercial construction projects. This role ensures drawings are accurate, code-compliant, constructible, and aligned with project specifications, fabrication practices, and field conditions. The ideal candidate brings strong experience with miscellaneous metals, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to catch issues before they reach fabrication or the field. This is an on-site position at our office in Walkersville, MD.

Essential Job Duties:
The essential job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Review shop drawings, erection plans, and details prepared by drafters/detailers for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
- Verify compliance with project specifications, architectural and structural drawings, applicable codes, and company standards.
- Identify errors, omissions, or conflicts and provide clear markups and direction for corrections.
- Ensure details align with fabrication capabilities and field installation practices.
- Review dimensions, tolerances, connections, materials, and finishes for accuracy.
- Confirm bills of materials match approved drawings.
- Coordinate with project managers, detailers, and fabrication staff to resolve design issues and clarify requirements.
- Assist with shop drawing submittals and revisions as needed.
- Support project schedules by ensuring timely and accurate drawing approvals.
- Serve as a technical resource for detailing standards and best practices.
Educational and/or Experience Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in steel or miscellaneous metals detailing and/or checking.
- Strong background in steel stairs, railings, and miscellaneous metal fabrication for commercial projects.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting architectural and structural drawings and specifications.
- Proficient in AutoCAD with the ability to open, review, mark up, and verify shop drawings.
- Prior experience in a checker or senior detailer role is strongly preferred.
- Candidates with deep field or shop experience and strong drawing review skills are encouraged to apply.
Essential Mental Functions:
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for providing direction and feedback
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze blueprints and specifications.
- Strong mathematical skills for calculating dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements.
- Keen attention to detail to ensure all designs are accurate and complete, and the ability to spot errors or inconsistencies.
- Primarily a seated position, with occasional standing, walking, and bending required.
- Visual acuity to interpret detailed drawings and specifications.
- Manual dexterity to use computer equipment and drafting tools.
- AutoCAD software for drafting and detailing.
- Basic office equipment including computer, printer, and scanner.
- Occasional use of measurement tools and blueprint scales.
Working Conditions:
This position is primarily office-based, with the Detailer Checker working closely with project managers, fabricators, and other team members. Standard working hours are typical, but occasional overtime may be required to meet project deadlines. The role emphasizes collaboration, attention to detail, and adherence to quality standards in a team-oriented setting focused on accuracy and efficiency.Additional Job Duties:
