Construction Accountant

Location: Walkersville, MD — On-site

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM
Compensation: $80,000–$105,000 annually, based on experience

Miscellaneous Metals, Inc. is a fast-paced steel fabricator and installer serving commercial construction projects across the Washington, D.C. metro area. We specialize in custom stairs, railings, and structural metal systems.

We are seeking a hands-on Construction Accountant to perform core accounting functions, support accurate financial records, assist with month-end and year-end close, and support construction job-cost accounting. This role requires strong accounting knowledge, attention to detail, independent judgment, and the ability to identify discrepancies and recommend process improvements.

This is an on-site position in Walkersville, Maryland. Candidates must be able to reliably commute to the office. Relocation assistance is not available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform accounting functions in Viewpoint Vista.
  • Prepare, review, and post general ledger journal entries.
  • Review general ledger and balance sheet activity for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare accounting schedules, reports, and supporting documentation for leadership and outside CPA review.
  • Work directly with the outside CPA on year-end close, tax preparation, and accounting-related questions.
  • Analyze job-cost activity, WIP-related information, accounting discrepancies, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Exercise independent judgment to identify errors, recommend correcting entries, and suggest internal controls or process improvements.
  • Coordinate with AP, AR, and Payroll staff to ensure accounting transactions and related records are accurate and timely.
  • Assist with tax payments, payroll liabilities, benefit-related accounting entries, and other recurring accounting records.
  • Maintain organized accounting documentation and supporting backup.
  • Maintain confidentiality of company financial, payroll, employee, vendor, and customer information.
  • Perform other accounting-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, including hands-on general ledger, journal entry, and reconciliation work.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of construction accounting, job-cost accounting, project-based accounting, or similar industry experience.
  • Experience using Viewpoint Vista.
  • Experience supporting month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Ability to review accounting records, identify discrepancies, and recommend corrections.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment when evaluating accounting issues and recommending solutions.
  • Strong understanding of accounting controls, documentation, and process improvement.
  • Strong Excel skills and ability to work with accounting reports.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, confidentiality, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with leadership, AP, AR, Payroll, and outside advisors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in steel fabrication, subcontractor accounting, manufacturing, or another job-cost environment.
  • Experience supporting WIP schedules, job-cost reporting, or cost-code review.
  • Experience working directly with an outside CPA on year-end close and tax documentation.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.

Working Conditions

  • 100% on-site office position in Walkersville, Maryland.
  • Standard office environment with occasional exposure to minor noise from the adjacent fabrication shop.
  • Regular computer use, accounting software use, spreadsheet review, and document review.
  • Occasional overtime may be required during month-end, quarter-end, year-end, or tax-related deadlines.
